Getting Started

What is Read2Unlock?

Read2Unlock is a family reading app that keeps your child's device locked until their daily reading goal is met. Parents set the goal — minutes per day, reading level, and which books — and the app handles the rest. When the child finishes reading, their apps unlock automatically.

It's designed for K–12 readers and runs on Android phones and Amazon Fire tablets.

Which devices does Read2Unlock support?

Read2Unlock runs on Android smartphones and tablets, and on Amazon Fire tablets. The child's reading app is installed on the child's device. The parent dashboard is accessible via read2unlock.com or the parent version of the app.

iOS (iPhone and iPad) is not currently supported. We'll announce iOS availability when it becomes available.

How do I get started?

Create a free parent account at read2unlock.com. Then download the Read2Unlock app on your child's Android or Amazon Fire device. Link the device to your parent account, set a daily reading goal, and you're ready to go.

The whole setup takes about five minutes. The Free plan is available immediately — no credit card required.

Is Read2Unlock safe for children?

Yes. Read2Unlock does not show ads to children on any plan, including Free. There are no third-party ad networks, no behavioral tracking, and no promoted content inside the reading experience. Reading data is private to the parent account and is never sold or shared with third parties.

Plans & Billing

Can I start on Free and upgrade later?

Yes — the Free plan is permanent, not a time-limited trial. There's no expiry and no card required. Whenever you're ready to unlock the entertainment lock and full parent controls, you can upgrade directly from within the app.

What's the difference between the plans?

The Free plan supports 1 child on 1 device with basic reading progress tracking and the parent dashboard. The entertainment lock is not included.

The Core plan ($14.99/month or $149/year) supports 2 children on 2 devices and includes the entertainment lock, full AI reading accuracy tracking, AI Story Mode, and all parent controls.

The Family plan ($39.99/month or $399/year) supports 6 children on 6 devices with everything in Core.

See the full comparison table for a side-by-side breakdown.

How does billing work?

Paid subscriptions are managed through Google Play or Amazon — the same app store you use to download the app. Billing is handled entirely by the app store, so your payment details stay with the store you already trust.

Can I switch plans or cancel?

Yes. You can upgrade, downgrade, or cancel anytime through Google Play or Amazon subscriptions. Plan changes take effect at the start of your next billing period. If you cancel, your account reverts to the Free plan — your reading history and all data remain intact.

Does one subscription cover all my children?

Yes. Each plan covers a set number of children and devices — Core covers up to 2, and Family covers up to 6. All children on your account share the same subscription. If you need more capacity, upgrading to the next plan takes effect immediately.

For Parents

How does the entertainment lock work?

On Core and Family plans, your child's device stays locked until they complete their daily reading goal. Once the goal is met, their apps and entertainment unlock automatically — no parent intervention needed.

You set the goal, the book, and the standards. Read2Unlock enforces it. You can override or re-lock at any time from the Parent Portal.

Can I change the reading goal or override the lock?

Yes, you have full control. From the Parent Portal, you can adjust the daily reading goal, change the target book, grant an early override if needed, or re-lock the device before the day ends. All of these are immediate — they take effect the next time the child's device checks in.

What happens if my child finishes reading but the device doesn't unlock?

The device needs to be online briefly for the unlock signal to sync. If your child is in an area with poor connectivity, the unlock may be delayed by a minute or two. Check that the device has an internet connection and the Read2Unlock app is running in the background.

You can also use the Parent Portal to manually grant an override immediately.

Can my child read books from their own library?

Yes. Read2Unlock tracks reading time and fluency as your child reads aloud or silently through the app. You can assign specific books or allow your child to choose from their reading library. The AI tracks their accuracy and progress regardless of which book they choose.

Can I have multiple children on the same account?

Yes. Core supports up to 2 children, and Family supports up to 6. Each child has their own profile with separate reading goals, progress tracking, and device assignment. Everything is managed from a single parent account.

Reading & Accuracy

How does AI reading accuracy tracking work?

When a child reads aloud, Read2Unlock uses speech recognition to follow along with the text. It detects misread words, skipped words, and hesitations in real time — and calculates a reading accuracy percentage for each session.

This data is available in the parent dashboard and session history, so you can track improvement over time without any manual testing.

Does the app work with silent reading too?

Yes. Children can read silently and the app tracks time-on-task and page progress. Accuracy tracking requires reading aloud, but the entertainment lock works with either reading mode. You can choose which mode is required in the parent settings.

What is AI Story Mode?

AI Story Mode generates short, original stories personalized to your child's interests and reading level. This feature is available on Core and Family plans. Children choose a genre or topic, and the app generates a brand-new story for them to read — keeping practice fresh and engaging rather than repetitive.

How is reading level determined?

Reading level is assessed based on the difficulty of the texts your child reads, their accuracy rate, and comprehension quiz results. The app builds a picture of reading proficiency over multiple sessions and updates the level estimate as more data is gathered.

This is a practical tracking tool rather than a formal diagnostic assessment — it's designed to give you a useful, ongoing picture of where your child is reading, not replace a specialist evaluation.

Schools & Tutoring Centers

Is there a plan for tutoring centers or schools?

Dedicated organization plans for tutoring centers and schools are in development. Currently, many tutoring centers use the Family plan for students with multiple children, or recommend the Core or Free plan to individual families.

If you're interested in bringing Read2Unlock to your organization, contact us — we're actively building out school and center partnerships.

Can I recommend Read2Unlock to my students' families?

Absolutely — many reading specialists, tutors, and teachers do exactly this. The Free plan gives families a zero-risk way to try Read2Unlock, and Core or Family gives them the full accountability system. You can find parent-facing resources and setup guidance at read2unlock.com/schools-tutoring.

Can I see reading data for my students?

Reading data is private to each parent account. Parents can share their child's dashboard with you directly during your sessions, or share screenshots of progress reports. A dedicated professional dashboard with multi-student visibility is planned for a future release.

Is Read2Unlock compatible with school IT policies?

Read2Unlock is a consumer app distributed through Google Play and Amazon Appstore. It runs on personal/family devices — not managed school devices. If your school uses MDM (Mobile Device Management) or a locked-down fleet of Chromebooks, Read2Unlock is designed as an at-home tool rather than an in-school managed deployment.
